The Pope held talks with the Iranian President

Iranian president Muhamed Khatami visited the Pope at the Vatican along with his cabinet members. He had prolonged talks with the Holy Father regarding Muslim-Christian relationships. Against the background of multi-religious debates, this visit is highly significant. They also discussed how to strengthen Christian-Muslim ties all over the world. The Pope has stated that this meeting was very important and beneficial while Khatami is highly optimistic about the future.
 
 

Pro-life workers against using public funds for abortion

Fortyseven American pro-life workers have filed a suit against the Government stating that they refuse to pay taxes which are being utilised to reward those who conduct abortions. From 1995 onwards the expense for abortion has been defrayed by the Government like other medical allowances. Complaints have been registered against the Government which has spent 10 lakh dollars from 1995 for this purpose.
 
 

The Pope’s visit to India

The Pope John Paul II may visit India this December, said CCBI President, Archbishop Alan de Lastic. The Pope’s visit will mark the conclusion of the second millennium and the beginning of the third. The proposal is to visit any one of the countries, India, Iraq or Hongkong in Asia. India may get top priority, it is hoped.

As the Pope’s visit is not only that of a religious leader but also of a head of state, the attitude of the Central Government is of special significance. Though the Pope does not need the invitation of the Central Government, if the government extends an official invitation, it will be a diplomatically important move.
