"People's theology" is often more vibrant than the official theology, said the renowned theologian Fr Davis Tressy. He was addressing the conference on Black Theology held in Chicago. This theology is of the people because it gives importance to themes like taking a stand for the poor and giving preference to social justice, he said.

Pope John Paul II has issued a new encyclical. It is an encyclical that harmonises modern philosophy with the truths of faith. The Pope intends this encyclical to be a remedy for the strong challenges that morality faces in the present day. This is the thirteenth encyclical to be issued by Pope John Paul II.

A World Religion Conference will be held at the Vatican. In October 1999 leaders of the various world religions will assemble at the Vatican.

The Polish people are of the opinion that the greatest Pole of this country is Pope John Paul II. 83.8 per cent of the people hold this view. The journal "Politic", that made this survey has published this result.
 
 
The Asian Church: Leaders should be spiritual masters -Cardinal Arinze
 
Cardinal Francis Arinze has exhorted the Church leaders of Asia to live as spiritual masters. The Cardinal stated that the tradition of Asia is to look for masters of spirituality. In order to respond appropriately, bishops, priests and religious must be transformed into spiritual directors, added the Cardinal.
 
 
Pastoral letter opposing divorce
 
A pastoral letter opposing divorce, which has become a lifestyle in the United States of America, has been issued by Cardinal Bernard Law, Archbishop of Boston. In a 47-page pastoral letter, the Archbishop warns against the divorce-culture and points out that artificial birth-control and divorce are obstacles to a happy marital life.
 
The pastoral letter states in strong language that divorce is an injustice to the life-partner and leads the future of the children into destruction. It also reminds the people that those who resort to divorce are not entitled to receive the Sacraments of the Church.
