Jesus
Meek and Humble of Heart

The Second Person of the Blessed Trinity is equal to the Father in essence. He is ‘Saccidanandam’. The essence of God is joy. In God, essence and mind are the same. The  mind of Jesus the Son is always united with the mind of the Father, "To the point of death-even death on a cross"(Phil 2:8).

Those who are essentially and perfectly united with the Father receive total authority over everything under God. They can be in harmony with everything. "Therefore God also highly exalted him " (Phil 2:9). This authority is the freedom which is the prime cause of serenity. "Learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls" (Mt 11:29). Jesus is here opening the path to consolation.

Meekness is the sign of authority and the freedom of the human situation. God decreed that man, created in his image and likeness, should have power over everything (cf Gen 1:26). This power is very clearly seen in Jesus of Nazareth. It is because he has this power that he is able to bless even while he is being nailed to the cross. The ability to maintain one’s equanimity even in contrary circumstances is also a sign of this mastery.

The world can learn humility of heart and meekness of nature only from Jesus! The reason for the various problems and restlessness of man is the fact that we do not surrender ourselves to God’s will! Since will and essence are one and the same in God, those who are united with God’s will, are also united with God’s essence which is perfect bliss. This union of hearts is experiential. It bestows the experience of ‘I in you’ and ‘you in me.’ Everyone and everything is encompassed in the heart of Jesus-if only the readiness to be encompassed is there!

Meekness does not mean absence of the power to react; rather it means to desist from taking revenge.

The one who gives a blow for a blow is taking revenge on another. He has lost his poise to the one who gave the blow. Here the attacker has authority over the victim who has avenged himself on him. The one who blesses the attacker is at peace and has power over him. He is able to show his wonted goodness in any circumstance. The one who blesses, implicitly asserts that the action of the attacker is wrong and proves his point by his forgiveness. This is possible only to those who are united with God in their inmost self. Such people act by the grace of God. Meekness is the fruit of the union of the heart with God, of humility.
