International year of the aged

The Vatican has decided to observe1999 as the year of the aged in order to exhort the faithful to value, encourage and take care of the old, and to imbibe lessons from them. We are indebted to the old for their legacy-both spiritual and temporal-to the Church and to the world. In the developmental but erroneous view of this world, the old become the victims of more control and rejection. Their spiritual and physical rights are denied. The pontifical council for the laity strongly object to this state of affairs. The Vatican has exhorted the faithful all over the world to respect the old and to provide them with all the conveniences necessary.

If the word of God must enter into the experiential level of individual lives, the deep knowledge of the Holy Bible is absoutely necessary. The Pope was speaking on the 30th anniversary of the Catholic Biblical Federation.
