The Gospel Is Power

Rev. Dr. John F. Cheriavely V.C.

We can read in the first chapter of the epistle to the Romans certain facts about the gospel. This short article is an attempt to describe them with the help of some questions.

1. Who is the author of the gospel ?

St. Paul calls the gospel the "Gospel of God" (Rom 1:1).
2. Through whom and in what manner was the gospel promised ?
The gospel was promised beforehand through God's prophets and recorded in the holy Scriptures."Which he promised before hand through his prophets in the holy scriptures" (Rom 1:2).
3. About whom is the gospel ?
The gospel concerns Jesus Christ, the Son of God and our Lord. " The gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh...For God, whom I serve with my spirit by announcing the gospel of his Son, is my witness that without ceasing I remember you always in my prayers" (Rom. 1:3,9).
4. What is the gospel ?
The gospel is that Jesus is the descendant of David according to the flesh, "and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord" (Rom. 1:4).
5. What does the gospel do ?
The gospel acts as the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek"(Rom. 1:16).
Jesus Christ who is the Son of God and our Lord is the gospel of God the Father. By accepting the risen Jesus Christ as our Saviour, all men without any distinction of caste or creed (Jews and Greeks) are enabled to be filled with the powerful Spirit of God to make their own the experience of salvation. St. Paul, who was once engaged in persecuting the Christians, all of a sudden came to know Jesus, the gospel of God. And then gradually he came to know the Holy Spirit, the power of God. After that he never was ashamed of the gospel. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek"(Rom. 1:16). On the other hand, he showed great enthusiasm in preaching the gospel. " Hence my eagerness to proclaim the gospel to you also who are in Rome" (Rom. 1:15).
